Getting Started
Creating an account
Go to emberrunes.com and choose to create an account. Pick a character name, then choose how you'll log in:
- An authenticator app (recommended) — scan the code shown on screen into any standard authenticator app. It then generates a fresh 6-digit code every time you want to log in.
- Emailed codes — if you don't have an authenticator app, the game can email you a 6-digit code each time you want to log in instead.
There are no passwords anywhere in the game. Whichever way you choose, you'll also be given a set of backup codes — write them down and keep them somewhere safe. A backup code is the only way back into your account if you ever lose access to your authenticator app or your email.
Once your account exists, you'll move on to the character creator to choose a body, face, hair and starting clothes.
Logging in
Enter your character name and the current 6-digit code from your authenticator app or your email. The game keeps your saved character, your inventory, your bank and everything you've trained between sessions.
Finding your way around
- Click to walk. Click any tile you can see and your character walks there, going round anything in the way. Click a tree, a rock, a fishing spot or a creature instead of empty ground, and you'll walk up to it and start working it or fighting it.
- Right-click for options. Right-clicking anything — the ground, an item, another player, a creature — opens a menu of everything you can do with it, with the option a left click would choose always at the top.
- The side panel. Down the side of the screen are tabs for your inventory, your worn equipment, your skills, your combat style, your prayers, your quest journal, your friends list, and the game's sound settings. Click a tab to switch to it.
- Chat. Click the line at the foot of the chatbox, or press Enter, to start a message; Enter or the Send plate sends it, and Escape puts it away, so the rest of your keys stay with the game. What you say appears over your character's head as well as in the log, so people nearby can see it without watching the chat window. The plate across the top of the chat picks what it shows: everything, only the game's messages, or only what players say.
- The minimap and the world map. The minimap in the corner shows what's immediately around you, with a compass. Press M to open the full world map: the whole of the world as seen from above, redrawn as it changes.
- Orbs. Your hitpoints, prayer points and run energy show as rune discs beside the minimap, so you can see them at a glance while you play. Click the run energy disc to switch running on or off.
Next steps
Head out into the world, start training a skill or two, and look out for the three people in Emberville who have a quest for you.
If you would rather learn a trade first, ask the people who work one. In Emberville, Garrow Lund at the smithy teaches smithing, Odric Brayle at the tool shop teaches woodcutting and fires, Hettie Rook teaches your first spell, Osric Fell at the tannery teaches leather, and Nessa Rill at the mill teaches bread, from the field to the oven; at Hollowbeck Farm, Wenna Hark in the barn teaches wool and pottery. Each walks you through one thing from start to finish, marks every step on your map, and hands you the first tool if you have none. Every town has more of them further up each trade: see Learning a trade.
